This creature concept was created in a free form method. I started with a polysphere and started scribbling on the surface and let the emerging forms define the character. As I started to see elements that suggested qualities about the creature I reinforced them with design elements. I started to see this creature as an herbivore, and thus left his mouth fleshy and beak-like. I also read aquatic and designed his nostrils more as ram scoops on top of his head rather than going with standard gills. His ears were also designed as a membrane to sense vibrations in the water rather than how mammalian ears function. And his warrior nature was reinforced by the bony protrusions for natural armor and the scarring of past battles. The sculpt was done in only a few hours as an exercise in concepting directly in ZBrush as well as enhancing the speed at which I sculpt.
